I am so excited sharing on the power of self-discipline in this post. As an individual, I have challenged myself in various areas of my life to being the best, but has this come so easy to me? Well, not so in many cases. In my few years on earth, I have had to learn, un-learn and re-learn so many things . I’ve had to pay certain prices. If you ask me, were they costly? were they painful….hmmm, they all were, but the good thing is that this is making me a better person daily. Just before I proceed to share on what self-discipline is, I will like to take us through the very words of King Solomon in the Holy Bible:

“A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls”- Proverbs 25:28

This simply means a city without walls is vulnerable; not safe, and this means that anyone or anything can enter the city to invade it. So is it with a man without self-discipline; no control of his words and actions. Such a man ends up being destroyed.

What then is self-discipline?

Self-discipline involves taking charge or control of your desires, actions, behaviors, emotions, thoughts etc. It is like a wall, it protects you, shields you from influences that can harm or affect your success. If you really want to achieve success in any area of your life, you need self-discipline. Brian Tracy in one of his best-selling books- The Power of self-discipline says that “self-discipline is so important and if you don’t develop it to a high degree, it is impossible for you to ever achieve what you are truly capable of achieving”.


Having given an introduction of what self-discipline is, I will proceed to share  3 powerful ways in which you can apply the principle of self-discipline to achieving your highest goals:

Self- discipline in your thoughts

You have to be disciplined about what you think. Engage in productive thinking; thoughts that would birth great ideas in your mind. The truth is, positive and negative thoughts would come to your mind, sieve whatever comes in and through your head. Your thoughts have a major role in achieving success. You display your thoughts, you act your thoughts. Your thoughts become your reality, therefore you have to be careful with your thoughts. If you think positively you will have positive results,  but if you think negatively you will get negative results. Think wisely!

Be disciplined in making decisions

As an individual, you need to be very decisive. You need to maintain a firm grip on your emotions. Do not be easily tossed to and fro by just anything. Make up your mind on certain things. Different people with different opinions will come your way, different ideas, fear would definitely come which can prevent or delay you from achieving your goals. Decide on what you want and go for it. Before making decisions, take out time to think about the steps you will take. Don’t make irrational decisions out of emotions! Your decisions are really important, they can either make or mar your success.

Apply the principle of self- discipline to your relationships

In taking certain decisions, you need the right set of people to talk with, people who can give you wholesome advice. It’s not everyone that has good thoughts towards you, so you really need to be careful with the people you relate with. You need the help of God in choosing rightly. You shouldn’t relate or share your goals with just anybody, be wise, be smart.

Practical ways of applying self-discipline

  1. Write down your goals- As you write down your goals, the more you see them and read them, the more they become real to you. Plan, set deadlines for each goal.
  2. Have enough self- determination- Self-determination drives you to achieve your goals.
  3. Be consistent- You can be determined and not be consistent, but sheer determination alone will never produce result. You need to be consistently determined. Lack of consistency kills your determination. It drops the level of your determination gradually, and then you lose focus on your aim.
  4. You need to be focused- Avoid distractions, look forward, look ahead.
  5. Be Persistent- The greatest test of self-discipline is when you persist in the face of adversity and you drive yourself forward to complete a task, no matter how you feel.
  6. Be prayerful- Prayer is key, prayer is powerful– Many challenges that we encounter on our way to achieving our goals can be solved on our knees, learn to pray about any and everything.



The highest form of mastery of success is self-discipline. Be disciplined in all that you do. Remember, any man disciplined and skillful in his business will stand before kings and not  obscure men.”
