Do you box God to a corner when seeking answers from him? Do you give him the back seat of your life? Do you seek answers from him but put off hearing ears and dictate how he should speak to you?
As believers, constantly hearing from God is what keeps us on track on our faith journey Psalm 23:4. This establishes the truth that God speaks to us and relates with us as Father to Son.
Under the old covenant, God spoke to people primarily through the Prophets, supernatural experiences, their peculiar circumstances and hence their revelation of his existence depended on an external factor. However under the new covenant, we know the father through the son as revealed by the Holy Spirit – in us. Hebrews 1:1-2 gives a full description of how God now communicates with us by his son (The Word). But does this mean that you only need to open a big Bible before you hear God speak?
Most times, people often say, I read my bible, but the stories I read do not apply to my current situation. Abraham’s’ faith walk, the Israelite’s journey to the Promised Land or the enthronement of King David. I am seeking answers on job change, direction for a new career path and specific details on who to marry. But I dare to say that the Bible is not just a book of historical stories without present day application.
2nd Tim 3 vs 16 buttresses that all scriptures is given by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness establishing the relevance of the scriptures in our daily lives. Oftentimes, the challenges intellectual believers face is that they are trying to understand and apply the scriptures with their own understanding.
The gift and ministry of the Holy Spirit to believers in John 14 vs 16 is to guide us into all truths, help us practically live our lives in accordance with the word. However, many believers are not enjoying this reality. Much more than just reading scriptures to get enlightened, the Holy Spirit wants to help us practically apply the word to our daily living. And he does that by any and every means: An inner witness, through our conscience, using nature, occurrences, events and even people to confirm his word to us.
But before we can practically come to know how the Holy Spirit talks to us, there is a need for constantly fellowship with him.
Below are some practical ways in doing so:
1. Firstly, get into studying and meditating on the word of God to recognize the person of the Holy Spirit.
2. Acknowledge his ever present ministry in your life beyond when you just pray and study the word, relate with him as your everyday buddy!
3. Speak to him about about the minutest details of your life, it’s as simple as dress selection.
4. Trust his voice whenever he is speaking, get over the- My mind told me so habit.
5. Allow him have a free flow in your daily life, be sensitive to his nudge, because it will surely come.
The person of the Holy Spirit has been given to us as our helper, (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), John 14 vs 16, and the good news is, he is with us forever.
Never allow situations or circumstances hinder you from enjoying his sweet presence, take a step daily in enjoying fellowship with him.
