How to overcome fear at the beginning of the year

Have you ever been in a room with the lights off before? How did you react when you suddenly heard the door creak open? Afraid, right?Well, it’s understandable. You really don’t know what’s coming your way, even if it’s only a rat pushing its way through your door. That’s what fear of the unknown does to you.

More often than not, we don’t see what is coming and so we fear what it could be. I must be frank with you, at the beginning of the year, we all have the tendency to fear. It could be fear of the unknown or of how the year would turn out. For some, they might have had it rough in the previous year. Others had it so good that they fear it wouldn’t continue that way.

While it’s humanly impossible to figure out the entire year on end, it will be a shame to allow fear to hold you back from taking steps in the direction of your goals. Even if you have clear goals and the right accountability systems in place, you cannot fully preempt what the future holds.

But then, this is not to scare you

Fear is real and it comes to everyone. But the final outcome of our lives largely depends on how we respond to our fears.Fear means different things to different people. I like how Warren Buffet puts it. He says,

First, widespread fear is your friend as an investor, because it serves up bargain purchases. Second, personal fear is your enemy.

So in a way, we all need some level of fear to move. But when fear comes to us, it should rather be a propellant to greater feats rather than a deterrent. This year, do not allow fear to rob you of confidence in your abilities and capabilities.

There have been lots of opinions about overcoming fear. But from the abundance of information have come too little execution. It is not about having the right body of information at our disposal. You must utilize it.

From our creaking-door analogy, it is clear that we fear what we don’t know. If this is true, then it makes sense that if you want to overcome fear this year, then you must be a voracious seeker of knowledge. Relevant knowledge. If for instance, you have fear about landing your dream job this year, it is better to ditch this fear right away by acquiring the right kind of information on what you must to do to land your dream job. But that’s only for starters.

Believe me, knowledge isn’t enough. There is more to it than simply knowing what to do. It pays to take consistent action on the knowledge you gain this year. Else you’ll simply gather potential energy. You have heard that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. To paraphrase, an idle mind is a breeding ground for fear.

If there is one way for you to overcome fear this year, it will be through consistent action in the direction of your goals and dreams. Regardless of how you feel per time.

And when you start working on your goals and experience stumbling blocks? What then do you do?

Go to your support systems. The kind of people that will challenge you and cheer you up to do and be more. This year, be very strategic about your relationships. Allow the right people into your life; those who will help you through difficult times during the year. Those who will lovingly (yet ‘brutely’) hold you to a high standard. You know the saying, “if you want to go fast, walk alone, but if you want to go far, walk with people.

So this year, choose your relationships wisely. Walk with people that will be there for you when you need them. Relationships are how we soar and keep soaring.
